The United Way of Williamson County hosted Flood Relief Action Day at Cool Springs Galleria June 21, where those affected by the flood met with agencies and gathered resources to assist them with recovery.

Suicide Risks and Prevention

Suicide is a terrible but preventable loss that also produces lifelong effects for the victim’s family and friends. Almost 1 percent of the U.S. population will die from suicide, with men outnumbering women. It is estimated that 12 to 15 suicide attempts occur for every death. Young people, ages 15 to 24, are especially vulnerable, as it is the third leading cause of death in this age group. Another group of people at high risk for suicide are those over age 45 (especially men) who are widowed or divorced with recent medical problems.

Teens and Texting

Scott Campbell, Ph.D., a communications professor who studies new media at the University of Michigan, recently completed a national study of teens and mobile phones. Survey results show that 85 percent of teens keep their phones either on or right next to their bed at night. In focus groups, many teens explained that it is common to be on the phone late into the night with their peers, usually through text messaging. The teens acknowledged this causes them to lose sleep, which can be a problem when they have school the next morning.

We live in a world of immediate gratification.  We are bombarded with a media blitzkrieg every time we turn on the television.  The take-home message is sometimes crystal clear, and sometimes a little less obvious.  Regardless of the clarity of the message delivered, we are often left feeling as though something is missing in our lives.  “I’m not driving the right kind of car or truck.”  “I don’t have the perfect job, house, kids or even spouse.”  “I don’t wear the right kind of clothes, cologne or perfume for that matter.”  “I don’t eat the right kind of foods.” And perhaps the most angst provoking of all, “I don’t have that perfect body that I see on the commercials for gym membership or exercise equipment.”

Rolling Hills Hospital Provides Help to Teens

Teens who come to our hospital are in crisis for some reason—either they pose a safety risk to themselves or to someone else, or they have not been able to be helped in the outpatient setting and need more intensive care.
